I often find myself having some of my most memorable moments by exploring unknown territory alone. Whether it’s out to a cafe breakfast while I catch up on the news or going to a yoga retreat in the middle of central California or attending an immersive conference experience. Sometimes, I’ve found, the solo path is a beautiful one.
The unknown has provided me with answers I never even had the questions for. You just never know.
Have you ever noticed how different your experience can be when you’re alone vs. being with a friend or partner or group? I feel like the great thing about wandering solo is that you’re forced to pave a new path that you wouldn’t have taken if you had company. You likely will meet people you wouldn’t normally have. Maybe you observe something you wouldn’t have normally seen. You eat at a place your friend or partner would never even consider.
Be brave. Talk to people. Chances are you’ll learn something interesting.
*Special shout out to Jeffrey Zeldman who inspired me this week at An Event Apart in Seattle. After hearing him speak, I immediately went back to my Airbnb and started making fairly drastic improvements to my website. And I’m very happy about it. The biggest change is this blog! As per his suggestion - to get better at speaking and writing about design and everything else. So here we go and thank you Jeffrey!
